No salaried driver in the arrangement, so the day rate drops accordingly.
At your set point before it arrives, so your driver loads into a cold box.
Complete control of schedule and handling, with no third party in the loop.
Comprehensive cover, registration and scheduled maintenance in the rate.
One-day hire through to long-term contracts, with the rate falling as terms extend.
We brief your driver on the unit, the controls and the temperature log at collection.
The short version of everything customers ask us about self-drive chiller van hire in the UAE.
Self-drive is the straightforward option: we supply the vehicle, you supply the driver. It costs less per day than driver-inclusive hire for the obvious reason, and for teams that already run their own distribution it is usually the right call.
The vehicle arrives pulled down to your set point, holding 0°C to +8°C, with a temperature log running. Comprehensive insurance, registration and scheduled maintenance are in the rate. Fuel, Salik, fines and cargo insurance are not — we set that out in writing before you sign, because the gap between an attractive headline rate and the real cost is usually hiding in exactly those lines.
At a glance
Per day, unambiguously yes. Overall, it depends on one thing the day rate does not show: what happens when your driver is not available.
If you have spare driving capacity — another trained person who can take the route at short notice — self-drive is the cheaper arrangement and you should take it. If a single sick day stops deliveries, the saving evaporates the first time it happens, and the real comparison is against a lost day of distribution rather than against a driver's daily cost.
The second factor is competence. Cold chain is lost by handling far more often than by equipment failure, and the habits that prevent it take time to become routine. If your drivers already have them, self-drive is fine. If cold-chain work is new to your team, hiring with a driver tends to cost less than the spoiled loads that the learning curve is paid in.
We brief whoever collects the vehicle on the refrigeration controls, the set point and the temperature log. Beyond the handover, four habits decide whether cargo arrives in condition, and they are worth making routine rather than mentioning once:
Never load into a warm body. We deliver pre-cooled, but if the van has stood open in the sun for an hour, run it down again before loading.
Leave a gap at the rear wall. Cargo stacked flush blocks the air return, which produces a warm pocket in a van that otherwise reads cold.
Stage before opening. Have the drop ready before the door opens. Above 45°C ambient, every extra minute costs real cold air.
Act on drift. If the temperature moves, record it and respond. Waiting to see whether it corrects itself is how a recoverable excursion becomes a written-off load.
Our guide to how a chiller van works covers the refrigeration side if your driver wants the underlying detail.
Self-drive is offered across the van fleet. Trucks from 3 tons up are supplied with a driver, because the weight class requires a specific licence category:
Chiller vans, 0°C to +8°C — fresh produce, dairy, chilled meat, flowers and pharmacy deliveries.
Freezer vans, -18°C to -25°C — frozen meat, seafood, ice cream and frozen ready meals.
Refrigerated vans — either configuration if your cargo decision is still open.
Long-term lease — a dedicated self-drive vehicle on a fixed monthly rate with maintenance included.
Self-drive pricing turns mainly on duration and vehicle rather than on the shape of your day. Have these ready:
Hire duration — daily, weekly or monthly. The per-day rate falls sharply as the term extends.
Vehicle size — 1-ton, high-roof or 3-ton body.
Configuration — chilled, frozen, or dual-compartment.
Daily mileage — a fixed city route prices differently from long inter-emirate running.
Emirates covered — single-emirate or cross-border on the same hire.
Start date — Ramadan, Eid and the summer peak book out early.
