What it is not for: Fresh produce, flowers or most pharmacy stock. Those need a chiller at 0°C to +8°C — sub-zero will damage them.
Temperature band and insulation. The bodies look near-identical from the kerb, but a freezer van carries heavier insulation and a higher-capacity unit so it can hold -18°C to -25°C against 45°C ambient. That is also why it costs slightly more to hire — the unit works harder and burns more fuel doing it.
Longer than most people expect, which is exactly why we deliver pre-cooled. Pulling a warm body down to -18°C takes time you do not have on a loading bay, and loading frozen stock into a body that is still coming down is the single most common cause of cold-chain failure we see.
It can run warmer, but if your work is consistently chilled you are paying for insulation and unit capacity you do not use. A chiller van is the cheaper and more appropriate vehicle for 0°C to +8°C work.
Yes, and it is one of the most common uses. Ice cream is unforgiving — it shows a temperature excursion as visible texture damage long before the product is unsafe — so it is worth specifying a driver who understands door discipline, and keeping drop times short.
